Kevin Zegers says his twin daughters found Air Bud “weird” and “too sad” when they watched it years ago

The actor reflects on his childhood fame and how it shaped his approach to supporting younger costars

Kevin Zegers’ twin daughters don’t have a positive outlook on their father’s most famous movie, Air Bud.

When asked if his daughters have seen the 1997 family film at The Madison premiere in New York City on March 9, Zegers tells PEOPLE, “Of course.”

“They watched it for the first time a couple of years ago. They think it's very weird. They think it's too sad. They didn't like that people were picking on me. They take it very personally,” the Rookie actor says.

Zegers has been slowly showing his 10-year-old daughters his past work, and says they are “starting to understand" what he does for a living. In fact, the two girls joined him for The Madison premiere.

“This is the first time they've done a red carpet. I try to keep them away from this stuff," the 41-year-old admits. "Alaina [Pollack], who's on the show, is about my age when I did that movie, Air Bud. I felt it's been great to have this responsibility to try to take care of her, because I know it was hard for me. It's hard to be in this environment as a kid.”

Even though his daughters don’t care for Air Bud, Zegers, who has been married to Jaime Feld since 2013, says he is “glad my kids will have some frame of reference of what I used to be like.”

The first movie in the Air Bud franchise came out in 1997. In addition to Zegers, who was 12 years old when he starred as Josh Framm, the movie starred Michael Jeter, Wendy Makkena, Bill Cobbs, Eric Christmas and Jay Brazeau.

Zegers also starred in the follow-up movies Air Bud: Golden Receiver, Air Bud: World Pup and Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch.

Zegers is now starring in The Madison, a Taylor Sheridan show that focuses on Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer's characters' move from New York City to Montana. The show also stars Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Matthew Fox, Beau Garrett, Amiah Miller, Ben Schnetzer and Rebecca Spence, with Will Arnett as a guest star.

The Madison premieres on Paramount+ on March 14.
