The Today show family is there for each other through good times and bad.
It’s been several months of highs and lows for the cast of NBC’s morning show, from the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mom Nancy to the death of Sheinelle Jones’ husband Uche Ojeh, and Dylan Dreyer publicly sharing the news that she and husband Brian Fichera were divorcing.
But throughout the hardships, the cast of the show has remained a comforting constant in one another’s lives.
“Sometimes when you’re going through something tough, it’s not what that person wants to talk about,” Dreyer tells PEOPLE in Williamsburg, Va., where the 3rd Hour of Today visited on Friday, May 15, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s founding.
“So for them to know that we’re here if you want to talk about it, but if you don’t we’re here to maybe bring some joy into your day," she continues. "We laugh, we joke, just like you are always there for your friends, we’re always there for each other 100 percent.”
Dreyer says the nature of the show lends itself to some escape from the stress of everyday life.
“I think working at the Today show just kind of shuts off some of the more stressful points in your life and you get to enjoy the moment with your friends for a little bit and forget about reality for a little,” she says. “But we’re always there to support each other.”

Al Roker, who recently celebrated his 30th anniversary with Today, says while people may think of them as celebrities, “We’re not immune from life.”
“We celebrate the good times, we rally around each other for the tough times, but on balance, it’s a great thing,” he says. “There’s no greater group to work with, Dylan, Savannah, Craig [Melvin], Carson [Daly], Jenna [Bush Hager], all that. It’s a joy. It really is.”

With all that’s going on in their lives outside of the show, Roker and Dreyer relish the time together on the road.
“You know what, [Al] always tells me what seat he’s in and says, ‘Try to get the seat next to me,’ ” Dreyer says. “So he’s a very good travel companion. We chit chat, we talk, we catch up on life, then we come here, we do our job.”
Similarly, Roker says that the trips for the show give the cast the time to catch up on one another’s lives behind the scenes.
“Everybody’s got lives, we’re together two or three hours a day, but you know, you’re doing stuff during the show,” he explains. “And the thing that makes this doable is we have the best crew in television that travels with us from our producers, our writers, our technical staff.”
