Comedian Bert Kreischer is feeling “lucky” to be alive after his tour bus went “up in flames” in between tour stops in the Midwest.

Kreischer, the 53-year-old star of the new Netflix series Free Bert, shared a photo of the charred remains of the burnt bus on Instagram on Sunday, March 15, captioning the post in part with, “We are all safe but my bus is gone.”

The stand-up comedian had just completed a tour stop in Fargo, N.D., on Saturday, March 14, and he was headed to his next show in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In an Instagram Stories post, he showed his team the photo and said, “We would have all been on it asleep ... [we] would have been dead.”

Later that day, Kreischer told PEOPLE how his team avoided being on the bus at the time of the fire, explaining that around midnight after the North Dakota show, the tour bus’ front right tire blew out on Interstate 94.

“It was a fluke accident,” he said. “We hit nothing, and it was no fault of the driver's. We waited outside for a couple hours.”

Then, they decided to leave the bus on the highway and split up into their other two crew buses, while the other bus awaited fixing.

At around 11 a.m. on Sunday, the bus driver who stayed behind heard a pop come from the roof. “Within a matter of seconds, the bus was filled with smoke,” Kreischer said, adding that the driver “exited the bus” and it went “up in flames” before he could even get back up to assess what happened.

Kreischer also shared a video of the bus on fire on his Instagram Stories.

In another follow-up Instagram Stories post, he and his team could be heard listening to Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” before the comedian assured viewers, “We’re all safe. If anyone’s wondering, we’re all safe.”

Kreischer and his team lost many belongings in the bus fire, including their clothing and other items they had left behind.

In a final Instagram Stories photo before his Sunday show, Kreischer posed outside of a Dick’s Sporting Goods store, where the group went to buy new clothes, writing atop the photo, “My current & only outfit.”

“Me, the other comedians, my assistant and my trainer are all very lucky,” he told PEOPLE. “The Lord works in mysterious ways.”

Kreischer added, ”As annoyed as we were to blow out a tire on a highway in a snowstorm in the middle of nowhere, we are all counting our blessings today that we weren’t on the bus when the fire broke out.”
