BTS slams Grammy Awards with defiant statement against new Asian-focused category

Global superstars BTS responded to a new category for the Grammy Awards created by the Recording Academy: “Best Asian Pop Music Performance."
The Korean pop stars subtly hit back at the creation of the newly-formed awards category, with each member of the group posting on their social media platforms on Wednesday, “We have decided not to submit to the Grammys this year. I hope that music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language.” Members RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook all ended their message with a thank you “to ARMY and everyone who is always with us.”
BTS released their latest album, ARIRANG, in March. Their pointed message to the Grammys comes as the group looks to celebrate their album in New York City this summer with “BTS THE CITY ARIRANG NEW YORK.”

“BTS was the first K-pop artist to get a Grammy nomination, and now BTS is the first K-pop artist to tell the Grammys to f--- off. For that reason, it will always be BTS,” wrote one fan on X in response to the news.

BTS made history as the first Korean artists to garner a Grammy nomination. In 2021, the seven-member group picked up a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their hit song, 'Dynamite.' They received a nomination again in 2022 for 'Butter.' In 2023, the group was nominated with Coldplay in the same category for 'My Universe' and in the Best Music Video category for 'Yet To Come.'

BTS released ARIRANG in March. The album immediately shot to the top of the Billboard 200, debuting at No. 1 with an impressive 641,000 units. The achievement is the biggest opening week for a group album in over a decade.
“They love music so much they wouldn't denigrate their most rawest, most deeply personal project to get a compensation award, some "thanks for participating' f--king medal. that's what a real artist is, that's what is like to love music because it fulfill you,” wrote one admiring fan of BTS on X.
“BTS achieved what no Asian artist had ever achieved before & breaking language barriers. We're proud that they stand up for their rights and we will not stay silent about the racism and xenophobia they continue to face from the industry especially Grammys Enough!!!” added another fan of the group.
“Kpoopies/antis can no longer say that ‘BTS is so desperate’ for that award. BTS has made it clear they don't give a f–—they've basically said, ‘F– the xenophobic/racist Scammys.’ Now let's see which groups/artists are actually desperate for that award and have no spine,” added another.
