Casey Affleck reflected on an awkward phone call with Christopher Nolan about Tenet.
Affleck called the Oscar-wining director for an explanation about the 2020 film amid an argument with his son.
“I haven’t called back, and he hasn’t called me,” Affleck quipped.
Casey Affleck is no longer getting calls from Christopher Nolan — and the actor thinks he knows why.
Before premiering his new movie, Company, at the Zurich Film Festival this past weekend, Affleck was asked by the film festival’s CEO Christian Jungen if he ever sought out directing advice from Nolan, who directed the Oscar winner in Interstellar and Oppenheimer. The Manchester by the Seastar answered with a particularly hilarious anecdote featuring one of his two sons. (Affleck shares sons Indiana, 22, and Atticus, 18, with ex-wife Summer Phoenix.)
“I did once call him,” Affleck said of Nolan, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I was driving home from school with my son, and we were talking about Tenet, and we were disagreeing about it. And I thought, ‘Let’s settle this.’”
Affleck called Nolan’s wife and producing partner Emma Thomas and told her he had “a quick question” for the famously smarthphone-less Nolan. In hindsight, it “probably was a mistake,” Affleck admitted. “We got him on the phone and asked him something that we probably could have just looked at [on] Reddit and figured out.”

Affleck said the Oscar-winning director talked them through the answer, and that was that.
“It sounded so obvious,” the Gone Baby Gonestar said. “Then we said, ‘Thank you.’ And that was it. And I haven’t called back, and he hasn’t called me.”

As Affleck continued talking with Jungen, he praised Nolan as “a great example” of someone making something that they have a genuine interest in. “Despite the fact that he makes these gigantic, hugely popular, successful movies, I don’t think that he’s doing things that he thinks will please other people,” he added.
Affleck is not stranger himself to the directing space. Company, which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this month, marks his third directorial gig. Affleck does not appear in the film, which stars Nick Nolte, Adelaide Clemens, Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Emily Alyn Lind, and Caylee Cowan. However, both of his sons make their acting debuts in the film. (Affleck previously directed I’m Still Here and Light of My Life.)

“Neither of them really wanted to be a part of this production,” Affleck told reporters during the Venice Film Festival earlier this month. “I was sitting around the house doing read-throughs of this script over and over and I would have my two kids read the younger and older teens.”
He added: “They were fantastic, but I definitely didn’t want to put them in the movie and they had no interest at the time of being in it.”
