NBA legend, proud dad to his trans daughter Zaya Wade, and ongoing advocate for trans youth, Dwyane Wade was at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin yesterday. He was on the red carpet for premiere of the film The Dads, a new documentary that follows Wade and other dads of transgender and gender-expansive children as they find solace in community while navigating the current political landscape for LGBTQ+ rights.
Wade executive produced a documentary through his production company, 59th & Prairie Entertainment. He and the other dads who are involved are bringing an important message to other parents who might be struggling.

In a recent clip about his ongoing advocacy work and the new documentary, Wades says, "I would love more fathers to find community. Because we feel like we're alone ... It's scary. It's lonely. You don't know what to do." The proud dad talks about the strength and support he's found among other fathers, "When you get into an environment and community like this, you know what's right. You know to do because you feel it. You feel that the only thing that matters is your kids. The only thing that matters is the love of your kids."
In the clip, Wade also unapologetically addresses where he stands on recent attempts to dismantle access to gender-affirming care: "We have so many people trying to erase, trying to delete, trying to act like they do not exist. That their healthcare is not important. That their life means nothing, and we just won't accept that, and we don't want you to except that either."

It's great to see parents, particularly dads, coming together to support one another and do the work to help make a difference in the lives of their kids.
"The ultimate destination for me and my family and these dads is to love our kids and that's it, simply put," says Wade. "[To] make sure they can live the life that you live and we live and so many others live."
