Alan and Lisa Robertson married each other for better or worse, and they really meant it.

The "Duck Dynasty" stars opened up about overcoming their marital struggles, including Lisa Robertson's infidelity, in an interview with Fox News Digital published Friday, May 15. The reality-TV couple's tumultuous love story is the subject of the upcoming Lifetime film "Faith & Forgiveness."

"To have a really strong and very intimate marriage – not just sexual intimacy, I mean spiritual, physical and emotional intimacy – there has to be honesty," Lisa Robertson told Fox. "Honesty is the most important thing that you can do to have a very successful marriage. We also need to look at ourselves the way Jesus looks at us."

Alan and Lisa Robertson, who were on-and-off high school sweethearts, married in 1984 and later welcomed two daughters. Alan said his ministry career put a strain on the couple's relationship. At the same time, Lisa was struggling with the emotional scars of her childhood trauma, including an alleged incident in which she was molested at 7 years old.

"I believe that at age 7, I began to be dishonest with who I was and what I was," Lisa Robertson said. "I think the evil one played a huge part in that because he would constantly remind me. I believe I started on that trail of dishonesty at that point, and that darkness really began there. As I grew older, it got worse and worse."

Lisa Robertson began having an affair after reconnecting with an ex-boyfriend. Her husband Alan eventually found about the infidelity, which led the couple to enter a temporary separation.

"I think for the first few weeks, I was leaning toward thinking that it was probably over," Alan Robertson said. "I was just not sure if I could ever fully trust again. [I wasn't] sure Lisa really wanted to be in our marriage. Do you really know if your spouse wants to stay? Do they want something more than you have to offer?"

Lisa Robertson said she turned to her Christian faith to navigate her rough patch with Alan, as well as revamped her lifestyle: "I changed the way I dressed. I changed the way I wore makeup. I changed what I listened to. I changed the way I approached men. I changed the way I talked because I had a potty mouth. I changed so many things."

Alan Robertson, who was "unfaithful to Lisa" in the early years of their relationship, said his wife's commitment to her faith helped him forgive her.

"Her growth as a person and as a Christian in those early weeks is what won me over to say, 'If she has the capacity to change who she is, like I did many years earlier, then I have the capacity to forgive as God forgives,'" Alan Robertson said. "That's when it all changed. We knew we were going to find our way back together."

Alan and Lisa Robertson went to counseling together and renewed their wedding vows in December 1999. The Lifetime movie "Faith & Forgiveness," which stars Luke Benward and Haley Ramm as Alan and Lisa, offers a retelling of the couple's romance.

"When unfaithfulness happens in a marriage, so many times, that's the end of it, but it doesn't have to be," Alan Robertson said. "Everything can be worked through."

"Faith & Forgiveness" premieres Saturday, May 16, at 8 p.m. ET/7 CT on Lifetime.
