Kate Middleton and Prince William’s 15-year marriage is still going strong.
According to royal biographer Ingrid Sewell, it’s all thanks to their foundation as “good friends” first.
“She was, in a way, his sounding board,” she said.
This year, Kate Middleton and Prince William celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary. At a recent live recording of the “A Right Royal” podcast, royal author Ingrid Seward offered some insight into why she believes Kate and William’s marriage has stood the test of time. Apparently, it’s all about their foundations as “good friends.”

“I think what the great thing was was that she and William were very good friends before they became lovers,” she said, per Hello!. “She was, in a way, his sounding board. During, I think it was their first vacation from university, he drove to take Catherine out. He drove to her house in Bucklebury and he took her to the local pub, and they had a long, long chat.”
She continued, “I can’t remember the exact timing. But they were very good friends, and she listened to him and she advised him, and she said, ‘Look, if you’re not happy doing History of Art, you know, try to do something else. Do Geography or something,’ which is what he did. She was such a good friend.”

The couple became friends after meeting at the University of St. Andrews in 2001 as first-year students. They went on to date, becoming an official couple two years later.

Clearly, their friendship has helped them get through a lot as a couple, including the challenges of being part of the royal family, raising children, and Kate’s cancer diagnosis.
As another royal expert recently explained, the ”secret” to their marriage boils down to one word: “support.” “Everything they do is in tandem, and this includes Catherine being the catalyst for William launching the Earthshot Prize when he doubted it could become the global success it has,” Russell Myers told The Mirror.
Yet another expert, Simon Vigar, recently added that the Prince of Wales “visibly relaxes” when Kate takes the spotlight.
These days, royal fans have had the chance to see their bond a little more clearly as the pair are increasing their public displays of affection. Body language expert Judi James recently told The Daily Mail, “Their rituals suggest there’s been no real change in the intensity of their love for one another—what’s happened is they have finally felt safe enough to trust enough, not each other but the public and the press, to show it.”
