As Michael B. Jordan was walking off stage after accepting the Oscar for Best Actor last night, he looked to his left and pointed at Jesse Plemons, who was seated in the front row with his wife, actress Kirsten Dunst. Plemons pointed back, and continued applauding, beaming at Jordan. (Watch here.)
The two actors have a long history; both starred in Friday Night Lights, Plemons as Landry Clarke and Jordan joining in season four as Vince Howard. “I was so anxious joining the show, because you guys were already established,” Jordan told Plemons during their Actors on Actors interview this past December. “Everybody had such a great relationship, and like the new kid going into a new school, you felt like the outsider. But at that first cast dinner where everybody introduced themselves and welcomed us into the team, all that washed away.”

There is a Friday Night Lights reboot in the works currently, though it’s unlikely Jordan or Plemons would reprise their roles. The new series is set to follow a Texas high school in the aftermath of a devastating natural disaster.

“It's a complete reinvention of the show,” Friday Night Lights director Peter Berg told Esquire. “We want to do it with a whole new cast, but obviously there’ll be football in it. But the original show was done a long time ago. There were no cell phones. No social media. It was a very different world, and yet the same values still exist, and the same family dynamics exist. Football’s only grown in its relevance in communities all over the country. So, the core themes of Friday Night Lights—that were revealed by Buzz Bissinger when he wrote the book—are very much present. There’s just so many new elements, so we want to look at that. And if certain cast members come back, have appearances, that’s great. But if Friday Night Lights works, it’ll be because it works as a reinvention.”

“Thank you, everybody in this room and everybody at home, for supporting me over my career. I feel it,” Jordan said during his Best Actor acceptance speech. “I know you guys want me to do well, and I want to do that because you guys bet on me, so thank you for keep betting on me. I’m gonna keep stepping up, and I’m gonna keep being the best version of myself I can be.”
