The 2-minute 9-second trailer shows participants taking on the roles of guards and prisoners before tensions begin to rise. Prisoners are seen pushing back against guards as the power struggle intensifies. The footage also shows emotional breakdowns and some guards admitting they went too far. Some question how far the roles can push them.

The trailer’s revolt storyline differs from what happened during the original experiment. However, prisoners did rebel during the 1971 study by barricading their cell doors and taunting guards. As tensions inside the simulated prison escalated, the guards responded by imposing punishments.

Psychologist Philip Zimbardo conducted the original Stanford Prison Experiment. Researchers planned to run the simulated prison for two weeks, but ended it after only six days. The study showcased that guards became increasingly abusive and prisoners experienced severe emotional distress.

Netflix’s version places 30 participants in a real prison facility rather than in a simulated setting on Stanford’s campus. The series aims to explore whether participants will conform to their assigned roles or retain empathy, morality, and individuality. The official description poses the central question: “Does power corrupt?”

The New Stanford Prison Experiment will premiere on Netflix on October 21, 2026. The first season will consist of six 45-minute episodes and follows 30 participants inside a real prison facility.

The series comes from Alfred Street Industries, with Jane Lipsitz, Dan Cutforth, Nan Strait, Dan Volpe, Jeff Grogan, and Mike Odair serving as executive producers.
