Beau Garrett and Elle Chapman play sisters navigating family drama in Paramount+'s new series The Madison

The pair rehearsed extensively for a physical fight scene that highlights their characters' emotional struggles

Beau Garrett and Elle Chapman are taking sibling squabbles to another level.

The actresses play sisters with an age difference of roughly a decade in Paramount+'s new series The Madison. Chapman tells PEOPLE that getting physical for their big fight scene in episode 3 took a lot of rehearsing.

"I think what was so helpful is we have an amazing stunt team. We prepped it for so long," says Chapman, 26, who plays younger sister Paige. "But it was a little chaotic, especially [because] I have to shove [Beau] against a bookcase."

"I struggled to not break in those moments because you almost feel a little ridiculous," she adds. "We really kind of had to go for it in some of the [takes] so that it plays on camera. But I think we nailed it. I think we figured it out."

For Garrett, 43, who plays older sister Abby, the fight scene was actually "kind of fun, to be honest," she says.

"There's a lot of emotions flowing in this show, and to be able to physically put it somewhere? I think [that's] what these girls do," she says of the onscreen siblings. "Naturally, they don't know how to deal with the trauma that they're navigating, so what better way than to throw a punch at each other?"

Garrett notes that the sisters' differences and overall lack of connection prior to the fight heavily influences their eventual brawl.

"They scrap. And I loved playing with that, and I loved being able to be angry, because Abigail really tries to keep it together for so much of this show, and that's one place where she doesn't," Garrett says. "She just gets to let loose. And that's how these two sisters work through their feelings."

In real life, Garrett says the sibling dynamic she shares with her actual sister differs vastly from the relationship she inhabits on the show.

"My sister and I are nine years apart and we definitely don't brawl," she says. "We had a very different relationship."

The Madison is the latest from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, who is also behind Marshals and Dutton Ranch. The series follows the Clyburn family, including Paige and Abby, as they straddle life between New York City and the Madison River valley of central Montana.

According to Paramount+, The Madison is “a profound love story channeled through a deeply personal family drama about resilience and transformation.” The story of the Clyburn family is told “across two distinct worlds — the beautiful landscape of Montana and the vibrant energy of Manhattan — as it examines the ties that bind families together.”

The Madison also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, Matthew Fox, Patrick J. Adams, Amiah Miller, Alaina Pollack, Ben Schnetzer, Kevin Zegers, Rebecca Spence and Danielle Vasinova.

The first three episodes of The Madison are available now on Paramount+. The remaining three will premiere March 21.
