The Voice Season 29 Battles Recap: Artists Eliminated and Saved Tonight

The Battles began tonight for Season 29 of The Voice: Battle of Champions, with coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine,and John Legend deciding which of their paired teammates will make it through to the Knockouts and which one will be eliminated.

Kelly, who won the “Super Steal” for the Battles, meaning she was the coach that had the most artists awarded a three-chair, earning her the right to steal an artist from another coach or save someone from her own team, used her Super Steal to save her team's Liv Ciara.

The twist this season is that there are no Saves — except for the one that Kelly won — but each coach will have one Steal. On night one, John used his Steal on Moses G, who had been eliminated by Adam.

This Battles also saw the return of celebrity advisors. This season, Jennifer Hudson was in for Team Kelly, Benji Maddenof Good Charlotte is tutoring Team Adam, and Muni Long is guiding Team Legend. Kelly had to miss the rehearsals for her team’s Battles due to the death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, so Jennifer served as both coach and advisor.

Kelly said: “Choosing Mikenley right off the bat, that was the first rehearsal I got to watch and this is the first performance I got to see. They were incredible. Mikenley has such a beautiful lower register tone and then you get surprised because she does this angelic head voice. I’m just excited to see what she wants to do in the Knockouts. I want her to do something to show something a little different about her to really stand out."

But Liv isn’t going anywhere. Both John and Adam pressed their Steal buttons, but just as John and Adam were bickering over who’s team Liv should join, Kelly pressed her Super Steal button, keeping Liv on her team.

Kelly said: “I had to use my Super Steal on Liv. Liv reminds me of a young Mariah when Mariah first arrived on the scene. At 16 years old, to just float like that with all that range and confidence as a performer, it’s really rare.”

Battle Round 2: Bay Simpson vs Hunter Jordan (Three-Chair Turn) from Team Adam

Song: “I’m the Problem” by Morgan Wallen (who was on Team Adam in Season 6)

Winner: Bay Simpson

Adam said: “Bay and Hunter was really [close]. I thought I was going to go with Hunter the whole time. Bay just takes things and does things that makes my soul feel good. It is definitely bittersweet because Hunter is amazing. I feel like he was a loss. I wish I had a Save.”

Battle Round 3: AJ Robinson vs Lucas West from Team Legend

Song: “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes

Winner: Lucas West

John said: “AJ is so talented, especially for how young he is and he has a great future ahead of him, but Lucas was just so soulful and flawless. He had a perfect approach to this song. I couldn’t send him home.”

Battle Round 4: Bijou Belle vs Jaali Boyd from Team Adam

Song: “Die For You” by The Weeknd

Winner: Jaali Boyd

Adam said: “Jaali has a killer voice, so soulful. She is really, really talented.”

Battle Round 5: Blaire Elbert vs JW Griffin (3-Chair Turn) from Team Kelly

Song: “Never Again, Again” by Lee Ann Womack

Winner: JW Griffin

Kelly said: “There is something so special about JW. He opens his mouth and you are just at attention. He is a storyteller. Knowing that he had that little bit of insight to push himself is what gets you to that winner’s circle.”

Battle Round 6: Grace Humphries vs Adi Arora from Team Legend

Song: “Just Give Me a Reason” by P!nk and Nate Reuss

Winner: Grace Humphries

John said: “I just felt that Grace was so good. Grace’s presence on stage, she just rose to the occasion. I am excited to work with Grace in the Knockouts. I’m curious to see what she will do next.

Battle Round 7: Alexia Jayy (3-Chair Turn) vs Moses G. from Team Adam

Song: “Nightshift” by The Commodores

Winner: Alexia Jayy

Adam said: “Alexia is one of my favorite vocalists. Her voice makes me want to weep, it’s so beautiful and emotional and raw and broken. It’s also so strong and fortified. It’s all of the things one could possibly have in a voice. I feel like Alexia could definitely win the show.”

Steal: Moses G.

John said: “Moses was incredible. He was just radiating positive vibes. Good energy. Star power. That kind of light on the show needs to continue to shine. I can’t wait to work with Moses in the Knockouts. I can’t wait to see where his taste is and what kind of song he wants to sing next. I am excited to coach him.”
