Two years before Victoria Jones' death at 34, her father Tommy Lee Jones sought to place her under a temporary conservatorship.

The *Men in Black* star petitioned a California court to appoint Margaret Caron Schmierer as the temporary conservator of his daughter on Aug. 7, 2023, according to Marin County Superior Court filings reviewed by **.

Records indicate that a judge granted that initial request, and also extended the conservatorship two weeks later. The court ultimately granted the *No Country for Old Men* actor's petition to terminate the conservatorship in December that year.

*The San Francisco Chronicle* reported that additional court records indicated that Victoria was in the middle of a 14-day involuntary psychiatric hold at the time of her father's conservatorship petition.

Victoria was found dead in the Fairmont hotel in San Francisco on New Year's Day, a representative for the San Francisco Fire Department told EW at the time. Units responded to "a report of a medical emergency" at around 2:52 a.m. local time on Jan. 1, and arrived around 3:14 a.m. in response to a "report of a deceased person." Paramedics then "performed an assessment" and Victoria was declared deceased.

A representative for Tommy Lee Jones offered a brief statement after the news of Victoria's death became public. "We appreciate all of the kind words, thoughts, and prayers," the statement said. "Please respect our privacy during this difficult time. Thank you. The Family of Victoria Kafka Jones."

PEOPLE previously reported that Victoria, who acted alongside her father in *Men in Black II *and *The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada*, was arrested on two misdemeanor drug charges and an additional misdemeanor charge of obstructing a peace officer in Napa County, Calif., in April 2025. In June, she was arrested again in Napa County, this time for misdemeanor domestic battery. She pleaded not guilty to each of the charges.
