A volunteer known as “Mop Man” has become one of the stars at the Commonwealth Games after breaking into a dance routine on a netball court.

CJ Miller, a Scottish man who is volunteering at the Games in Glasgow, went viral after performing an impromptu dance at the Hydro arena, where the netball is being staged.

The Games volunteer delighted fans during a break in play when he walked on court with a mop and stole the show by breaking into an eccentric dance.

Netball courts are swept or mopped in between each quarter of a match to ensure player safety and prevent injuries. Miller, though, had other ideas.

He began mopping the centre of the court, but when Queen’s 1984 hit I Want To Break Free began playing inside the venue, he launched into an impressive dance.

The crowd inside the 13,000-capacity venue cheered as Miller used his mop as an air guitar and performed “the worm” – a dance move when a person lies on their stomach and forms a rippling, wave-like motion through their body.

He also showed impressive flexibility by raising his right leg towards the mop head before performing the splits over the centre circle on the court.

After finishing his 30-second routine, Miller, who claimed to be a professional dancer, continued mopping the court as if nothing had happened. His performance, though, quickly went viral on social media, earning him his new nickname.

In a sport where players accelerate rapidly, stop suddenly and perform sharp changes of direction, netball has one of the highest rates of knee injuries. As a result, mopping or cleaning the wooden flooring is paramount.

Miller, though, went above and beyond his duties by showing creative flair. “You know what, I was hired to do a job and I thought, you know what, we’ll do it full send. We’ll send it full,” he told Australia’s network Sunrise.

“Mop Man” revealed that Cardi B, the American Grammy award-winning rapper, was his main inspiration. “I looked at it and I thought that’s exactly what the Commonwealth needs, Cardi B. That’s the one,” he said.

Miller, who is one of 4,000 volunteers helping out at the Glasgow Games, did not expect his crowd-pleasing routine to be such a hit.

“I got up, you know, did the normal, got my Starbucks, contemplated life decisions, came into work and then there it was. There it was. And it’s been a wild 12 hours,” he said.

He added that he is a “cleaner by day for this week” only. “Normally, I am a professional dancer,” Miller said.
